tales real and unreal - an exhibition of paintings by artist Pushpakaran Kadappath
Artist Statement:
My perception of contemporary world and its affairs is through the impressions I make out of the memories and thoughts I had in the past. Its source of energy is definitely the cultural canvas interwoven with history, stories and myths of my village. I am taken from a state of consciousness to an unreal state of mind when images come out of the visual journey I pass through. Sometimes I wonder whether it is real in itself. Those uncertain states of mind may be the sources of my creative enterprises. I present socially relevant subjects as myths are narrated or as stills from the scenes of childhood plays. To give my works a strong background I have limited the choice of colours to deep colours like black and white instead of being in the whimsical state of colours. When lines are also arrayed, images get transformed in to a variety of novel expressions as if it explicates the undercurrents of my mind than it is perceived. I present all my works with free thoughts and that is how images take birth from me as well. Sometimes I reach a phenomenal state of mind. The dreams I have seen reiterate such a state of mind that I can fly. But I do not have wings. I wish to go back to my childhood. My images of childhood dreams in which I had been with wings and scaring and adventurous images get transformed into novel images in my contemporary life. http://www.pushpakarankadappath.com
